How Rakuten cashback tracking actually works
You have to start every purchase from Rakuten
Rakuten's model is affiliate attribution: you click through from rakuten.com, the app, or the extension, the store pays Rakuten a commission, and Rakuten splits it with you. The click sets a cookie — Rakuten's terms state outright that with cookies disabled you cannot earn cash back, because the cookie is how your account gets credited.
That cookie is fragile, and Rakuten's own help pages list what breaks it: visiting another coupon or rewards site after clicking (it can override the attribution), using a coupon code Rakuten doesn't list (can void the cash back entirely), VPNs, ad blockers and cookie blockers, letting the shopping session go idle, and finishing checkout in a different tab. Some stores also exclude anything paid for with a gift card.
Pending, confirmed, paid — the three clocks
A tracked purchase shows up as pending within 24–48 hours, while Rakuten waits for the store to report it. Confirmation — when it becomes payable — typically takes 3–14 weeks (some Rakuten pages say up to 17), to cover returns and exchanges. Dining offers confirm in 3–5 days; travel runs 45–120 days after the trip.
When Rakuten actually pays you
Payouts go out quarterly — February 15, May 15, August 15 and November 15 — and each date pays a closed earning period (per Rakuten's blog, the February 15 payment covers cash back confirmed October 1 through December 31). You need $5.01 in confirmed cash back to be paid; anything less rolls to the next quarter. Payment methods: the "Big Fat Check", PayPal, American Express Membership Rewards points, Bilt points, or gift cards. There is no direct deposit and no Venmo.
The welcome bonus, precisely
The advertised signup bonus requires at least $25 of qualifying purchases within 90 days of joining, and the amount varies by promotion — check the current terms rather than any fixed number. Amazon purchases don't qualify, and the bonus isn't instant: it arrives with your next quarterly payment.
Is Rakuten safe to use? What the real risks are
Safe in the sense people usually mean: yes. This is a program that has run since 1999, operated by a named legal entity under a publicly traded parent, with an A+ Better Business Bureau rating — not a scheme that vanishes with your balance.
The real risks are mechanical, and worth knowing before you rely on the money. Tracking can silently fail for any of the reasons above, and untracked cash back is unpaid cash back. Rakuten's terms allow a $5 per month inactivity charge against your balance after 12 consecutive months without shopping activity. And because payouts are quarterly, confirmed money can sit in your account for months before a payment date arrives.
The review aggregates tell the same split story (both retrieved 2026-08-19): Trustpilot rates Rakuten 4.6/5 across 36,735 reviews — the happy path — while BBB customer reviews average 1.49/5 across 174 reviews, with 2,027 complaints closed in three years. People who reach the dispute path have a very different experience than people whose tracking simply works.

One pattern recurs across the reports above: the failure is selective, not total. Small purchases track fine while the single largest transaction comes back "ineligible," followed by a templated list of possible causes and, sometimes, a token goodwill credit.
