Is Capital One Shopping legit?
Legit, in gift cards. Whether a purchase tracks is the part you can't count on.
Capital One bought the Wikibuy extension in 2018 and the rewards clear, as e-gift cards only, never cash. What fails is the tracking: a purchase has to be confirmed by the store before any reward exists, and the terms and help pages between them list more ways for that confirmation to fail than most people will read. This page sticks to Capital One Shopping's own documents and linked user reports.

How Capital One Shopping rewards tracking works
The store pays Capital One, and the extension has to be the last click
Capital One Shopping is an affiliate. Its terms say it earns a commission when you make an eligible purchase and shares a portion of that commission with you as Shopping Rewards. You either click the Activate button when the extension pops up on a store, or click through from the portal on the website, and then finish the purchase in that same tab. The help center is blunt about the tab part: stay on the page until you finish your purchase.
The terms say the reward is typically calculated without shipping, taxes, fees and any excluded items. It tracks through cookies, and the terms list clearing cookies or browsing history among the things that can stop a purchase from confirming. Per Capital One Shopping's own pages, confirmation can also fail when you:
- have another extension installed that offers rewards or discounts
- shop in private or incognito mode, behind a VPN, or with an ad blocker other than its own
- pay with a gift card, coupon or store credit, or buy gift cards or promotional deals, which the exclusions page says are typically ineligible (some stores have paid on them)
- return or exchange part of the order (the trip can flip to "ineligible")
The first one is the common case. A Doctor of Credit commenter found the Rakuten and RMN extensions were killing Capital One Shopping's tracking, which is exactly what section 6.2 of the terms warns about.
Pending, then available: 30 to 90 days
A confirmed purchase shows as pending a few days after you buy, while the store verifies eligibility. The terms say rewards typically post approximately 30 to 90 days after an eligible purchase, and may take longer. Travel is slower: flights, hotels and rental cars can show as ineligible until the stay or rental is over, then post 60 to 90 days after that.
E-gift cards from $5, and never cash
Once your balance reaches $5.00 you redeem for an e-gift card, which the help center says arrives by email within 24 to 72 business hours. The terms say Shopping Rewards may never be redeemed for cash, and that all redemptions are final. The retailer list changes without notice. Doctor of Credit tracked Walmart and Safeway dropping off the list and coming back through 2023 and 2024, and Frequent Miler reported Marriott, eBay, Walmart and Lowe's being added in February 2026. Unused rewards in an open account do not expire, but the terms also say a closed or terminated account forfeits its balance, and that Capital One may suspend an account at any time.
The 2025 lawsuit over affiliate cookies
The first suit was filed in January 2025 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia; the consolidated case is In re Capital One Financial Corporation, Affiliate Marketing Litigation, No. 1:25-cv-00023. The plaintiffs were online creators. Their complaint alleged that the Capital One Shopping extension replaced a creator's affiliate cookie with Capital One's own at checkout, taking the commission even when the shopper had arrived through the creator's link.
Capital One's response, as reported by Reuters: "Capital One Shopping does not replace affiliate marketer cookies or unlawfully take credit for commissions." In June 2025 the judge dismissed several claims and let three proceed, among them unjust enrichment and interference with the creators' contracts. In December 2025 Capital One agreed to pay about $4 million to settle, without admitting or denying the allegations, and, per the ABA Banking Journal, committed to business-practice changes for at least two years, including compliance reviews and an ombudsman for affiliate and merchant complaints. The court gave final approval on September 22, 2026.
What this means for you as a shopper is narrower than the headlines. The plaintiffs were creators chasing commissions. No shopper's reward was at issue. But the complaint describes, with Capital One as the defendant, the fight this whole category is built on. The store pays one commission, and whichever affiliate tag is set last at checkout usually collects it. Which is why Capital One Shopping's own help page says to disable other shopping extensions before activating, and Rakuten's says the same in its own words.
Is Capital One Shopping safe to use? What the real risks are
Safe in the sense people usually mean. The counterparty is Capital One Shopping Holdings, LLC, a Capital One company, with 11 million Chrome users, and three of the reports above are people who redeemed. The balance is not going anywhere; whether a reward ever appears is the question.
A purchase that never confirms earns nothing, and the help center says that if another program interferes it cannot confirm the purchase or adjust rewards afterward. The payout is gift cards only, from a list that changes, so a reward is worth what you can spend at those stores. And the terms give Capital One the right to suspend an account at any time, with the balance forfeited.
One more thing to know before installing, since it is the opposite of how Cashbackproof works. Capital One Shopping's own permissions page says the extension monitors the products you view and purchase on e-commerce sites and must be able to interact with data in web pages, and its privacy policy says it may provide your personal information to Capital One affiliates. That is the trade: the price comparison and the coupons run on what it sees you shop for.
The review sites split hard (both checked 2026-10-20). The Chrome Web Store shows 4.1 stars. Trustpilot shows 1.1 of 5 across 470 reviews, 92 percent of them one star, on an unclaimed profile. We found no Better Business Bureau profile for Capital One Shopping or Wikibuy on 2026-10-20, only Capital One's. Read the four-star reviews and the one-star reviews side by side and you would not guess they used the same extension.
Capital One Shopping not tracking? What to do when rewards go missing
The pattern in the reports above is a reward that shows up as pending, or as an email saying it is on the way, and then turns ineligible or never posts. The help pages give no deadline and no evidence list, so what follows is their process plus the one firsthand description of what support accepted.
- 01
Check the right account, then wait out the posting window. Rewards show as pending a few days after purchase and post 30 to 90 days later. If you have more than one Capital One Shopping account, the help center says the reward may be sitting in the other one.
- 02
Report it through Get Help. Start at capitaloneshopping.com/get-help; the request form itself is at help.wikibuy.com/hc/en-us/requests/new, or email help@capitaloneshopping.com. The help pages state no deadline for reporting, so the only clock is the 30 to 90 day posting window.
- 03
Keep the order page with the pop-up on it. One four-star Trustpilot reviewer with $3,483 in rewards over three years says a screenshot of the order page with the Capital One pop-up showing, emailed once the 30 days are up, is what gets a purchase to post. That is one person's experience, and the only description of what support accepts that we found. Add the order confirmation, the date, the store and the subtotal; a ticket without them is a ticket that comes back asking for them.
- 04
Run one rewards extension at a time. Capital One Shopping's terms say rewards may not be available if another extension with similar benefits is installed, and one of the reports above is exactly that failure.
Step 03 is where tickets die. Capital One Shopping has your activation click in its logs, and it wants a screenshot you almost certainly never took. Cashbackproof keeps that screenshot and the click record for you.
How this page is sourced, and why there are no affiliate links on it
Every fact about how Capital One Shopping works (posting windows, the $5 minimum, gift-card-only redemption, what breaks tracking) comes from its Terms of Service, effective July 16, 2026, and its help center, both listed below and last checked 2026-10-20. The lawsuit facts come from the plaintiffs' counsel's case page, Reuters and the ABA Banking Journal. The user reports above are quoted word for word and linked to the original posts.
This page has no firsthand tracking data. The ledger stays empty until there are real rows to put in it.
There are no affiliate links on this page. Capital One has never paid us anything, we are not in any Capital One affiliate or referral program, and the only money in this is Cashbackproof subscriptions.

Questions people ask about Capital One Shopping
Is Capital One Shopping legit?
Yes. It is the extension Capital One bought as Wikibuy in November 2018, run by Capital One Shopping Holdings, LLC, with 11 million users on the Chrome Web Store. The rewards are real but they come only as e-gift cards, and the practical risk is purchases that never get confirmed by the store.
Is Capital One Shopping safe?
Safe in the way that matters. It is a named company, Capital One Shopping Holdings, LLC, and it pays the rewards it confirms. The risks are mechanical. Another shopping extension, an ad blocker, a VPN or incognito mode can break tracking, rewards post 30 to 90 days after purchase, and a closed account forfeits its balance.
How does Capital One Shopping pay you?
E-gift cards only, once your balance reaches $5.00. The terms say rewards may never be redeemed for cash. The help center says the card email arrives within 24 to 72 business hours, and the retailer list changes without notice. Unused rewards in an open account do not expire.
Why is Capital One Shopping not tracking my purchase?
Capital One Shopping's help pages list the causes. Another extension that offers rewards or discounts was installed, you used incognito mode, a VPN, or an ad blocker other than its own, its cookies were blocked, you left the page before checkout finished, you paid with a gift card or promotional deal, or you returned part of the order.
How long do I have to report missing rewards?
Capital One Shopping's help pages state no deadline. Rewards usually show as pending a few days after purchase and post 30 to 90 days later, so there is nothing for support to look at before then. Report through Get Help on the site or help@capitaloneshopping.com, with the order confirmation and a screenshot of the order page showing the offer.
Was Capital One Shopping sued over affiliate cookies?
Yes. In January 2025 online creators sued Capital One in the Eastern District of Virginia, alleging the extension replaced their affiliate cookies with its own at checkout. Capital One said it does not replace affiliate marketer cookies. It agreed to pay about $4 million to settle, without admitting or denying the allegations, and the court gave final approval on September 22, 2026.
